Abstract
‘WERK No.16: Joe Magee Special’ (2009) Harley, editorial director with contributing text and interviews, translated into Japanese.
WERK, first established in 2000, is a limited edition magazine produced by WORK in Singapore with global circulation (Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, USA).
All editions are experimental in concept and development, and individually finished.
This edition was the first retrospective of award winning artist filmmaker Joe Magee's work over a 10-year period. As editorial director, the concept for this edition was Harley's and made possible by online dialogue between artist filmmaker in London and publication designer in Singapore, a working method and process that she initiated and facilitated. The resulting publication with commercial, personal and commissioned images sitting side-by-side on equal footing with text and interviews ran to 376 full-colour-pages with die-cut foldouts pasted throughout, and a spine hand-finished with newspapers from the UK and SE Asia. The publication won two prestigious industry awards at D&AD (British Design and Art Direction) 2009 for Outstanding Achievement in Design and Image.
WERK No.16 was exhibited through an installation in the Rocket Gallery, Tokyo from 28/11/08 to 23/12/08.
