Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the relationship between walkability and gender-based violence, as well as to examine how race influences women's experiences during their pedestrian journeys. A case study was conducted in the Porto neighbourhood of Pelotas, RS, Brazil.

The research employed the following methodological procedures: participant observation and walking interviews. The findings revealed that gender-based violence remains the main barrier to women's walkability. It was also found that Black women who are part of the LGBTQIAP+ community are the most vulnerable to violence.

The study advocates for the development of public spaces that are safer and more inclusive, incorporating the affirmation of diverse identities, education and awareness around diversity, and the enforcement of measures against violence targeting these groups.
