    Abstract

The work undertaken involved a brief study into the justification for the use of a knowledge-based system in civil engineering site investigation and the development of a prototype system. The prototype would be used to support the justification and to establish the potential applications for a commerical system in the site investigation industry. The report of the work includes brief outlines of the features required by, and subsequently incorporated within, the prototype system and details of the development tool used to create it. The prototype system was written to run on an I.B.M. compatible P.C. supporting MS-DOS.
