Abstract

In this paper an evaluation of the lightning performance of standard UK 400 kV tower configurations is performed. For the evaluation, various soil resistivities, three tower heights as well as two stroke current distributions, CIGRE and one derived from a lightning location system are taken into account. Furthermore, two flashover mitigation methods, arresters and underbuilt wires are investigated, which are proposed to reduce the back-flashover rate of the line.
