Abstract

The current status of the UK FEL program is reviewed at the end of its second year. A description of the optical and electron beam diagnostics is given, and a preliminary study of spontaneous emission at harmonic frequencies is reported. The purpose of the UK project is to undertake a comprehensive experimental study of the free-electron laser (FEL) mechanism, embracing investigations of spontaneous radiation, gain and laser oscillation in the fundamental and higher order harmonics. It is ultimately conceived as a user facility for a multidisciplinary cross section of potential researchers with a common requirement for a widely tunable narrowband picosecond laser source.
