Abstract
A tunable polarization retarder based on a bulk buried heterostructure semiconductor waveguide has been demonstrated for the specific application of quantum key distribution. Simplicity of construction, low drive voltage, wide spectral range of operation and potentially high frequency response make it ideal for polarization modulation at the transmitter (Alice) and receiver (Bob) in at least two quantum key distribution protocols. The modulator performance was analyzed in a test quantum key distribution system. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
