Abstract

Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring and surface finish (SF) analysis provide a non-contact method of gauging tool wear in automated machining systems without interrupting the process. Both AE and SF instruments are optical devices that use optical fibers to connect a probe head near the workpiece to the optical and detection system located away from the machining center.
