    Abstract

This paper outlines the principles of a technique which might, under certain circumstances, be an alternative to conventional SONAR systems. The technique, known as auto by cross-correlation using varying delay times, is briefly outlined and its strengths and limitations investigated using computer simulations. To conclude progress in the construction and development of an ACVD acoustic array is discussed and some possible applications are suggested.
