Abstract
A prototype system for the visual classification of magazines has been developed and evaluated as a necessary prerequisite for eventual implementation by a Norwegian distributor. The approach adopted involved the use of relatively simple but reliable procedures based on size measurement, grey-scale correlation and colour analysis of small sub-windows within the two-dimensional image. The developed software has been tested on a set of 10 magazines presented initially at normal orientation, but subsequently at any orientation to the single overhead camera. © 1989.
