Abstract
Due to the convergence of computer services and telecommunication technology, data traffic exceeds the telephony traffic. Thus, optical packet switching has emerged as one of the promising technology that allows high speed and date rate/format transparency. It harnesses a tremendous bandwidth that supports enormous delivery. However, an appealing solution for traffic scheduling of optical packet switched is required to resolve the packet contention. The resultant of packet loss is due to the contention of two or more packets with same outbound address with same wavelength. The packet loss probability is addressed as the most inevitable sand significant measurable performance parameter. Thus QoS provision is foreseeable as a consequence of diverse applications and drastically growth of traffic demands. This paper evaluates the necessity of traffic scheduling with QoS provision from wavelength domain via wavelength conversion. This approach adopts the concept of tunable optical wavelengths converters that has attracted considerable interest currently. Also, the possibility of introducing class differentiation is examined. The simulation results show the packet loss ratio can be improved with an appropriate selection of design parameters including the number of wavelength and degrees of conversion. Thus, the packet does not suffer from conventional buffering delay while maintaining an ample network throughput.
