Abstract

This paper presents an analysis on the behaviour of tunnel under high overburden stress using the numerical analysis method. Simulation of the critical sections for the Pahang Selangor Raw Water Transfer Tunnel with high overburden was performed by using the 2-D elasto-plastic finite elements stress analysis program. The tunnel is excavated by using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). High overburden is applied above the tunnel model and rock medium is assumed to be isotropic for the Finite Element Analysis. Evaluation of the tunnel behaviours under high overburden stress were carried out through the analysis on strength factor, maximum displacement, differential stresses and safety factor of tunnel support systems. The results show that this numerical analysis method gives stable and good convergence. Furthermore, it allows reasonable predictions of the tunnel behaviours under different rock conditions, support systems and overburden stress.
