Abstract

Electromagnetic wave techniques for through-water communications that can provide high data rate signalling solutions over short ranges are discussed in the paper. An approximate heuristic model is proposed to analyze and make performance predictions for surface contour electromagnetic wave antennas that are suited to mounting on a flat or curved metallic surface such as the hull of an underwater vehicles or sections of an offshore platform. The mathematical model developed is validated experimentally.
