Strategic Risk Management

Research output: Book/Report › Book

Abstract

This book examines strategic risk management as an integrated, enterprise-wide discipline concerned with risks that affect an organisation’s ability to achieve its strategic objectives. It frames risk and opportunity as two outcomes of the same process, arguing that managing risk is not only about limiting harm but also about enabling value creation. Set against an environment of growing complexity, uncertainty and rapid change, the book explains why organisations must move beyond traditional, silo-based approaches to risk. It distinguishes between strategic, operational, change and unforeseen risks, showing how each affects organisations in different ways and therefore requires different management responses. A central theme is risk interdependency: how risks interact across functions and how these interactions can create new, emergent risks, such as cascading failures. The book introduces practical ways to identify, map and manage these interdependencies, providing a foundation for developing a coherent enterprise-wide risk management system that supports informed decision-making at strategic level.
