Abstract
For a single pair of subsystems where the source is randomly excited over the entire surface, it is the receiving subsystem modes which are important, not the source modes. For building structures where the damping is high, few modes are required for reasonable agreement with statistical theory. The minimum number of modes is only about 1 or 2 modes per band. If the modal overlap is used as the indicator, the modal overlap should be greater than about 0. 2. When there are few modes, the actual coupling loss factor will be less than predicted.
