Abstract

Smart coatings and membranes are currently flourishing on the market. There is hence an important need in developing techniques or using existing techniques to characterize their properties. This chapter describes some important testing techniques and methods (both qualitative and quantative) and their working principles. These methods cover testing areas of smart textile coatings and membranes of thermal regulation, self-cleaning and hydrophobic surface, medical and drug release, antimicrobial, water vapour management, as well as strengths. Some of the reported techniques and methods are standardised and others are experimental. They are all suitable for evaluation of new research and product development of smart textile coatings and membranes.
