Abstract

BASW aims to support social work practice when working with autistic people (both children and adults), their families, and supporters. This Guide provides basic awareness, knowledge, and practice guidance on autism and working with autistic people and has been designed to provide this information succinctly so that social workers can gain a level of understanding proportionate to their role.

This Guide is designed to assist social workers to understand the sometimes often complicated issues relating to autism and to facilitate best practice with autistic people, their families, and supporters, and aims to assist the reader to think about what they know, what they need to know, what they do not know, and how to find the information/knowledge they need to know about when undertaking work with autistic people.
