Abstract

Self-compression of 2.2-mJ, 80-fs mid-IR pulses is achieved using a 1.5-mm-thick CaF2 plate. Femtosecond pulses with peak powers orders of magnitude higher than the selffocusing threshold can undergo self-compression without breaking up into multiple filaments.
