Abstract

From the Scots suits worn by young boys in the 1850’s European bourgeoisie on hygienic purpose, to the formal girls outfits of the 1930’s and the current “preppy” trend, the kilt remains as one of the most essential piece of cloth in children’s wardrobes. This article, published in the context of a major conference on regional fashions in Europe, explores the different status of the kilt in children’s wardrobes and the way it lost its cultural and highly political meanings when entering children’s formal dress code.
