Responding to ‘Cultural Matching’ in Organisations: A Study of Migrant Professionals’ Career Work

Research output: Contribution to journalMeeting abstractpeer-review

Abstract

How do highly skilled migrants maintain a career in the face of cultural matching in host country organisations? Drawing on a study of migrant professionals attached to the UKs energy sector, we examine how cultural matching in formal and informal organisational practices is experienced and navigated. We highlight how individuals feel distanced from the career goals that they hope to achieve and reveal three occupationally embedded career work strategies that they undertake to maintain a career in the energy sector. We introduce simultaneous ‘engagement-disengagement’ as a distinctive approach for highly skilled migrants to persist in host country work settings.
