Abstract
Riverside communities in Brazil face periodic natural or man-made floods, which are aggravated by the lack of infrastructure offered by the government. Therefore, it is important to identify the problems that lead these communities to disaster situations, and to propose solutions in the absence of initiatives to prevent natural disasters by the competent bodies. The case study of this research is the fishing community of Pontal da Barra, in the city of Pelotas, in Brazil. Through the application of a qualitative and participatory methodology (observations, unstructured interviews, and analysis of primary and secondary sources), we sought to identify, understand, and subsequently propose project solutions that could meet the needs of the target audience. Therefore, we seek a better quality of life for the population living in riverside areas, to provide better ageing in the place for all.
