Abstract

This study aims to map user behaviour and analyse user perceptions in a redeveloped former port area known as Cais Embarcadero, located in Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. A case study was selected for this investigation, based on the criteria of being a port city with historically abandoned areas within its port zone and the presence of ongoing or completed urban intervention projects. Within Porto Alegre’s former port district, Cais Embarcadero was therefore chosen as the focus of analysis.

The research employed the following methodological procedures: physical survey, behavioural mapping, and a questionnaire. According to the findings obtained through the analysis of user behaviour at Cais Embarcadero, weekends show significantly higher levels of activity compared with weekdays. However, the behavioural maps reveal that the main reason for visiting the site is the presence of restaurants, followed by the enjoyment of the natural landscape.

The study also indicates that the vast majority of visitors appreciate the space and do not perceive—or are not aware of—the social and urban consequences that the development may generate in the city.
