Abstract
In the Upper Silesian coal district not far from Katowice, there is now a European field test on the long term storage of the greenhouse gas CO2 in non-destructible hard coal seams. The goal of this research project, funded by the EC under the name RECOPOL (Reduction of CO2 emission by means of CO2 storage in coal seams in the Silesian Coal Basin of Poland) is the comprehensive analysis of the engineering and cost feasibility of this storage concept under the prevailing geology and infrastructure of Central Europe. It is also planned to study whether the injection of CO2 in the coal seams increases coal seam gas production (Enhanced Coal Bed Methane recovery). The discussion covers the scientific-engineering preliminary work and accompanying research of the project; the drawing up of the pilot borehole; and the present state of the preparation for the CO2 injection. The topics include reduction of CO2 emissions as goal of European environmental policy; CO2 storage in the ground; the RECOPOL project; structure and course of the RECOPOL project; choice of site and drawing up the geological model; laboratory experiments; reservoir simulations; drawing up the injection borehole and geophysical measurements; technique of obtaining the coal bed methane and the CO2 injection; safety engineering aspects; and outlook.
