Abstract
Analytical data for four asphaltenes isolated from different stages of a direct coal liquefaction process are reported. Long contact times under hydrocracking conditions produce asphaltenes of lower H:C ratio, lower heteroatom content and higher molecular weight than the initial extract asphaltene. These changes are reflected in a depressed reactivity to further hydroliquefaction.
