Abstract

This overview chapter describes the context for psychology in Southeast Asia by offering helpful background on the region for those less familiar with Southeast Asia and its ten ASEAN nations. Carefully selected data on regional and national demographics will be presented and interpreted, such as estimates of populations, religious, ethnic, and language groups, economic issues, and relevant social indicators such as educational and occupational information. The status of psychology in the region will be outlined along with its place in the global context of psychology as an international discipline. A brief description of the book’s contents will integrate the material and regional approaches to guide the reader.
