Abstract

Crystallisation of the host molecule p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene from toluene affords three pseudo-polymorphs, two of which can be isolated on a large scale and used to form 'frustrated' organic solids that are capable of gas sorption. The structures of these three polymorphs are compared, and the gas sorption capabilities of the two phases that can be isolated in bulk form are described. © The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique 2008.
