Abstract

This study aims to present an overview of national academic production on the relationship between older people and a sense of place. To this end, the CAPES Journals Portal and the CAPES Theses and Dissertations Database were used as the primary sources of data. The keywords employed in the search were: ageing; older people; age-friendly cities; sense of place; and urban design.

In total, 68 publications were examined, comprising 42 journal articles, 14 doctoral theses, and 12 master’s dissertations. To guide the data collection process, a spreadsheet was developed to systematise information related to keywords, fields of knowledge, research methods, and to identify barriers and facilitators of age-friendly environments.

The results highlight a range of factors that influence age-friendly environments. Among the facilitators, universal design and accessibility were particularly prominent. In contrast, the main barriers identified include architectural barriers, lack of cleanliness and insecurity in public spaces, prejudice, limited family support, and dependency, all of which negatively affect ageing in place.
