Abstract
The aim of the project is, in the first instance, to mount a comprehensive series of experiments to characterise the performance of the laser in both amplifier and oscillator configurations. Relatively high gain is expected over a wide range of output wave-lengths (2-20 mu m) for various combinations of linac energies and wiggler fields. Harmonic generation provides the exciting possibility of extension to even shorter wavelengths in the visible and UV. Initial investigations have been carried out into the spatial and spectral distributions of the spontaneous radiation generated by the interaction of a 100 MeV electron beam with a two-section 2. 47m wiggler magnet assembly.
