    Abstract

The possible causes of distortion in fabricated beams are considered. Results are presented from tests on full-scale welded beams and from smaller scale test units. A description is given of the welding methods, weld sizes, temperature conditions, and of the various sizes and thickness of the plates used to assemble the beams. Guidance is given on methods which can be employed to minimize distortion as a result of the welding processes, and a method is put forward for the prediction of and design against distortion in welded beams.
