Abstract
This collaboration with the Tyndall National Institute (Ireland) resulted in the first demonstration of a novel type of solar concentrator based on large-area 3D photonic crystal (PhC) structures intended for building integrated photovoltaics. Such a solar concentrator could be integrated into a window structure, allowing the amount of daylight coming into a room to be traded-off against the desired level of electrical generation. Up to eight layers of the PhC structure based on 250nm beads were deposited with a relative efficiency increase of a factor of 3 achieved compared to the clear substrate
