Abstract

Dye ozonation, which is a new and innovative approach in textile dyeing effluents, can be effectively used for ozonation of Direct Red 23 dye in fixed bed batch bubble column reactor. The oxidation potential of ozone (2.07 V) is 1.52 times greater than that of chlorine and high oxidation potential allows it to degrade most organic compounds. The utilization of ozone in textile effluent treatment is a very attractive alternative as it is a powerful oxidizing agent which can react with several classes of compounds. Direct Red 23 dye is a commonly used dye in textile industries and its initial dye concentration of 100mg/l, 121 mg/l, 134.5mg/l, 200mg/l have been measured at time intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 minutes. The effectiveness of fixed bed batch bubble column reactor can be gauged from the high mass transfer rate and high contact surface area that play an important role in dye degradation.
