Abstract

Sulphur-containing polymers have been prepared from thiophene by initiation with Friedel-Crafts catalysts, and the residual sulphur content present following subsequent pyrolysis at temperatures up to 1000 °C has been examined. Significant quantities of sulphur are retained in the chars produced, and it is suggested that the thermal stability necessary for retention is achieved by incorporation of sulphur in stable ring systems forming part of the char structure. © 1972.
