Abstract
in this paper, we explore the relationship between organizational decision-making and the resulting behaviors around Intelligent Automation (IA) systems, defined as the automation of working using artificial intelligence (AI), robotic process automation (RPA), and their related subfields. Drawing on empirical data from a case study of a large Scottish organization, we investigate how decisions made at various levels, from policy to senior management and daily use, shape the form and function of IA systems over time. We argue that a systems approach, considering the interactions between human workers and IA technologies, is crucial for understanding the co-constitution of these systems within organizations. Our findings reveal that IA systems are influenced by only by senior management decisions but also by the adjustments and reactions of employees and customers in their daily use. Furthermore, we highlight the role of external factor, such as supplier recommendations and government policies, in shaping the configuration of IA systems. We contribute to the literature by providing empirical evidence of the multi-faceted nature of decision-making around IA and its impact on work practices. We call for further research to explore the specific interactions between IA systems and stakeholders within organizations, as well as longitudinal studies to clarify the evolving relationship between humans and new digital technologies.
