Abstract

This paper proposes a novel fault location (FL) technique on a double-circuit transmission line (DCTL) based on an optimization problem. This proposal is particularly prominent when only measurements of voltages and currents are required at the two terminals of the DCTL of during-and pre-fault periods. Then an improved cuckoo search (ICS) is proposed to find out the optimization solution for locating faults on the DCTL. The ICS algorithm takes the advantage of the chaos theory for improving the algorithm performance in the exploration and exploitation procedure. A comparison between the FL results of applying the ICS, CS, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and genetic algorithm (GA) is implemented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposal.
