Abstract

Laser overlap welding of zinc-coated steel is an attractive process for the automotive industry, but specific problems can occur where apparently good welds may be produced but with no join between the two sheets of material. This paper describes a simple and reliable technique for detecting these errors by analysing the light generated by the welding process, using an optical sensor which is non-intrusive to the process.
