Measurement of nonresonant third order nonlinearity of undoped and silverdoped arsenic sulphide in the near-infrared is reported. A beam distortion (Z-scan) technique was used for the measurements. The method can resolve both the refractive and the absorptive part of the nonlinearity and also their sign. It is shown that silver doping changes the sign of refractive nonlinearity. © 1993.
