Abstract

There are two methods to model the lateral load response of slab-column frames; Effective Beam Width Method(EBWM) (Han et al. 2009) and Equivalent Frame Model (EFM) (Park et al. 2009,). Different researchers calibrate their model derived from experiments using one of these two methods. Also, current design codes (ACI318-08, Eurocode 2-2004) permit the EFM for the analysis of two-way slab systems under gravity loads, as well as lateral loads such as seismic loads. This study shows that both the “EBWM” and “EFM” models are not appropriate in accurately predicting the response of slab-column frame systems under lateral loads. An artificial neural network limit state model for the drift ratio is developed for the first time to the analysis of slab-column connections under cyclic loading.
