Abstract
This chapter discusses the development and performance of new generation, isolated carbon nanoparticles embedded diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. We first briefly describe general applications of DLC coatings with the focus on their role in the transportation industry. DLC drawbacks and recent trends to improve their properties are explained in detail. The later sections describe the design, deposition method, and demonstration of carbon particles embedded DLC coatings for improved mechanical properties and tribological performance. A simultaneous improvement of 20% hardness and 10% toughness with ~70% decrease in wear rate are likely to enhance the fuel efficiency and life of DLC-coated engine components.
