Abstract
This paper summarises the development of particle image velocimetry (PIV) over the last decade and describes its applications as an effective measuring technique for mapping complex flow fields. A review of work in the field is given. Current aerodynamic and hydrodynamic investigation by the authors exploiting the method are described and used as illustration. © 1988 Elsevier Science Publishers Ltd.
