Abstract
Model basin tests carried out at approximately 1/14 scale on two production risers in a towing tank are described. One of the risers considered is modelled on that used in the Buchan field, while the other has a compact low drag configuration of the same production capacity. The tensioning system was carefully modelled, and vessel surge motions were accurately represented in both regular and irregular waves. Current was represented by carriage motion. Some results are presented for bending moment and displacement distribution for both models and comparisons are made with computer simulations to deduce appropriate values for hydrodynamic coefficients.
