Abstract

A radiofrequency excited slab waveguide CO laser, emitting 80 W with 13% efficiency at room temperature with a sealed-off gas envelope, is presented. More than 30 wavelengths have been observed simultaneously between 5.3 and 5.7 µm. The alignment dependency of the modes and lines are shown with the dominant combinations indicated. Attempts to stabilize the lateral waveguide modes to improve the spatial coherence of the multiline output are reported. The paper also presents the time evolution during pulsing, with the influence on possible applications assessed.
