Abstract

Ringing in the ear or tinnitus is a prevalent and serious symptom. As such, it is imperative to properly assess the tinnitus characteristics and its impacts on the daily life of tinnitus sufferers. This is to avoid further negative consequences, as well as to proceed with the appropriate management. To document the impacts of tinnitus on specific aspects of life, many selfadministered questionnaires have developed and validated accordingly. In this chapter, the essential issues related to the use of validated questionnaires in assessing the severity of tinnitus are highlighted as intended. In particular, the purpose, design and psychometric properties of selected tinnitus questionnaires are discussed accordingly. Comparisons are made between closed-set and open-ended questionnaires to give further insight into an optimum method in assessing the impacts of tinnitus. Collectively, more research efforts are required in this important area of tinnitus to further assist clinical professionals in tinnitus assessment and management.
