Making measurements with optical fibres

Optical fibres are widely used in communications. They also permit sensitive optical measurement techniques such as interferometry to be applied outside the confines of the laboratory. Types of fibre are briefly discussed and two examples are outlined of optical fibre sensors for displacement measurement.
