Abstract
This Paper illustrates the role of knowledge-based technology (KBT) in computer-aided structural engineering design (CASD), and it presents a prototype knowledge-based system illustrating the application of KBT to CASD. The concept of non-monotonic reasoning is described with respect to structural engineering design. Techniques for the automated control of previously made design inferences, after a non-monotonic design state has been encountered, are described with respect to a prototype knowledge-based design system for industrial steel buildings.
