Abstract

An informed appreciation of cultural nuances and differences is central to global financial literacy and the establishment of trust, yet, it is often overlooked. With this in mind, the chapter focuses on three main themes. First, it discusses how financial centres are operating in a globalised world and associated challenges, with a focus on London and New York. Second, it looks at money and mobile payments, with a focus on the case of M-Pesa in Kenya. We conclude with a discussion of the cultural factors at work in the case of Islamic finance and the risk-averse Japanese financial system.
