Abstract
This paper reports work directed at developing a control methodology based on the techniques of symbolic computation. In particular, it describes the notion of a symbolic model and shows how this can be derived on the basis of causal relationships between subsystems of a plant. Experimental results from a fluid level control problem, achieved using an expert system shell, are presented.
