Abstract
This is a bilingual edition. The theme “Favela Architecture” was chosen for this work due to its historical relevance in the landscape and urban design of the city. This importance is recognized through works found in literature, cinema, art, and music. The justification for this publication lies in the need to explore the architectural richness and urban atmosphere of favelas in Brazil, aiming to demonstrate—through graphic expression and environmental perception studies—the symbolic elements that constitute these landscapes, which are often marginalized by public authorities and academia alike.
Thus, the book begins with drawings and collages, offering the reader an interpretation of the imaginary of the favela in Chapters 1 and 2. Following this, the discussion turns to themes such as tourism, gentrification, and the marginalization of people forcibly removed from their homes, with both national and international analyses presented in Chapters 3, 4, and 5.
The work hopes to spark new discussions on the topic and open up a new perspective on life in Brazilian favelas and the harmful effects of gentrification on the urban landscape and everyday life.
