Abstract

There are many applications, such as interferometry, metrology and coherent optical communications for which the quasi-monochromatic light obtainable from a fibre laser operating with a single longitudinal mode would be very desirable. In this paper we describe the experimental demonstration an approach to obtaining single longitudinal mode output. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of an injection locked fibre laser. The low power radiation from an external cavity semiconductor diode laser was injected into an erbium-doped fibre laser to give single longitudinal mode performance.
