Abstract

With industrial processes currently representing 23% of the UK’s total heating demand, pathways to improve energy efficiency and to decarbonise heating and cooling processes are critical to achieving the UK’s net zero targets by 2050. This report explores advancements in industrial heat and energy efficiency through research carried out by the Industrial Decarbonisation Research & Innovation Centre (IDRIC), focusing particularly on decarbonisation strategies within the UK’s industrial clusters.

The report highlights IDRIC’s research on energy systems modelling and optimisation, waste heat recovery and energy storage, fuel switching, and infrastructure and systems integration, alongside emerging workforce considerations.
