Abstract

Thin absorbers with improved performance based on the concept of Artificial Magnetic Conductors are proposed. Improvement is achieved by introducing perturbations in the unit cell of the AMC. Those result in excitation of the odd mode in the vicinity of the modal interaction null, with currents in successive elements flowing in opposite directions. As a result, significantly stronger currents are excited. Introducing loss in the conducting elements, the increased currents result in significantly higher levels of ohmic absorption. Full wave techniques are employed to demonstrate the concept. Improvement in the absorbed power of a thin absorber by a factor of 20 is demonstrated. © 2007 IEEE.
