Knowledge of the natural dynamic response of a missile is necessary in designing its control system. Calculation of these modes requires accurate stability derivatives. In a conceptual or preliminary design, these must be obtained quickly and easily for variable missile configurations. Aerodynamic prediction computer programs such as Missile Datcom are currently used to fulfill this requirement. However, DATCOM's accuracy and limitations in fulfilling this role must be defined. This report examines the feasibility of using aerodynamic prediction methods to determine the stability derivatives, emphasizing DATCOM. It then examines methods of determining the dynamic response of missiles based on the derivatives obtained from the predictions.
